Chapter 336 He's Trying to Extort You
Chapter 336 He's Trying to Extort You
As I walked out of the police station, a cool night breeze blew by.
Chen Lingling stood at the door, her hands still trembling.
"Mr. Ling," she said, "I..."
Ling Yun looked at her and said, "Go back and rest first. We'll talk about it tomorrow."
Chen Lingling shook her head.
"I'm not going back," she said. "I'll just wait here."
Ling Yun looked at her without saying a word.
Zhao Hu walked over.
"Mr. Ling," he said, "I'll stay with her. You go find a place to stay first."
Ling Yun thought for a moment and nodded.
"Call me if you need anything."
He turned and got into the car.
The car started and drove into the night.
In the rearview mirror, he saw Chen Lingling still standing there, her shoulders hunched, motionless.
January 25, 1998, 9:00 AM.
Gulou Hospital, inpatient department.
Ling Yun stepped out of the elevator carrying a fruit basket. The corridor was quiet, and a nurse at the nurses' station was writing something with her head down. He walked over and asked for directions to room 309.
The ward was at the end of the corridor, a three-person room. The door was open, and you could see the beds inside.
Ling Yun went inside.
A man lay on the bed by the window. He was in his fifties, with gray hair, his face bandaged, and his left eye swollen shut. He had his eyes closed, but opened them when he heard footsteps.
"Who are you?"
Ling Yun placed the fruit basket on the bedside table. "Are you Chen Jian?"
The man stared at him, his eyes wary. "It's me. Who are you?"
"Zhao Weiguo's friend."
The man's expression changed. "What are you doing here?" He struggled to sit up, wincing in pain. "He hit me, and you still dare to come?"
Ling Yun looked at him. "Why did he hit you?"
The man paused for a moment.
"What? Why?" he yelled. "He's crazy! I was just walking peacefully down the street, and he rushed up and started hitting me!"
"I've come to see you," he said. "How badly are you hurt?"
The man snorted.
"See that?" he pointed to his face. "Eight stitches! Two broken ribs! The doctor said I'll need to stay in bed for at least three months!"
Ling Yun nodded. "What do you want?" he asked.
The man paused for a moment, then asked, "What? What do you want?"
"A letter of understanding," Ling Yun said. "How much would you be willing to sign?"
The man's eyes darted around. "What do you mean?"
"What I mean is," Ling Yun said, "name your price."
The man stared at him for several seconds. "I don't want money, I just want him to go to jail."
Ling Yun didn't speak, his eyes fixed on Chen Jian.
Chen Jian felt a little uneasy under their gaze, but he persisted in pressing the issue.
Lingyun gave him a quote, which kept increasing from 50,000 to 500,000. Chen Jian was clearly tempted, but he still refused to sign the letter of understanding.
Ling Yun didn't say anything more, turned around and walked out of the ward.
"Zhao Hu," he said, "go and investigate Chen Jian's background. In particular, check if he has any recent criminal record, any debts, or any unusual behavior."
"clear."
Two o'clock in the afternoon.
At the entrance of the Public Security Bureau.
Chen Lingling was still standing there, having not slept all night, and looked terrible.
Lingyun's car stopped.
He got out of the car and walked up to Chen Lingling.
"Go back and rest first," he said. "I'll handle things here."
Chen Lingling shook her head.
"I'm not leaving," she said. "I'm going to wait for him to come out."
Ling Yun looked at her.
"If you just stand here," he said, "will he come out?"
Chen Lingling did not speak.
Ling Yun sighed.
"Zhao Hu," he said, "take her to the hotel."
Zhao Hu nodded and pulled Chen Lingling outside. Chen Lingling struggled for a moment but couldn't break free, and followed him.
Ling Yun turned and walked into the police station. It was the same middle-aged policeman sitting in the duty room reading documents. He looked up when he saw Ling Yun come in.
"here we go again?"
"Hmm." Ling Yun sat down opposite him. "I'd like to know more about Chen Jian's situation."
The middle-aged policeman looked at him. "You've checked?"
"I checked a little."
The middle-aged policeman nodded.
"That person," he said, "is not simple."
Lingyun waited for him to continue.
"We've investigated his background," the middle-aged policeman said. "He has a criminal record. Three years ago, he was sentenced to a year in prison with probation for fraud in his hometown. Last year, he was detained for fifteen days for disturbing public order. Also, he's heavily in debt, and debt collectors come to his door every day."
"The matter of Zhao Weiguo beating him," the middle-aged policeman continued, "is probably not that simple."
Ling Yun looked at him. "What do you mean?"
The middle-aged policeman glanced around and lowered his voice.
"Yesterday afternoon," he said, "someone saw Chen Jian loitering around the entrance of Zhao Weiguo's company. Later, when Zhao Weiguo's car came out, he followed behind it."
Ling Yun paused for a moment. "He's following Zhao Weiguo?"
The middle-aged policeman nodded. "Why did Zhao Weiguo hit him?" he said. "It's hard to say right now. But Chen Jian's presence there was definitely not a coincidence."
Ling Yun stood up. "Thank you."
Four o'clock in the afternoon, in the hotel room.
Chen Lingling sat on the sofa with a glass of water in front of her, but she didn't drink it. Zhao Hu stood by the window, looking outside.
Ling Yun pushed the door open and came in; Chen Lingling stood up.
"President Ling..."
Ling Yun sat down opposite her. "Chen Jian followed Zhao Weiguo to Nanjing," he said.
Chen Lingling was stunned for a moment. "What?"
"He kept loitering around the company entrance," Ling Yun said. "He followed Zhao Weiguo's car as soon as it came out. He followed him all the way to Nanjing."
Chen Lingling's expression changed. "He..."
"He did it on purpose," Ling Yun said. "He deliberately let Zhao Weiguo see him, deliberately let Zhao Weiguo make a move."
Chen Lingling's hands began to tremble. "Because of me," she said. "It's all because of me."
Ling Yun looked at her. "Your stepfather knew you were here all along?"
Chen Lingling nodded. "He knows I'm at Xinghuo," she said. "He even called me last month asking for money, but I didn't give it to him."
"and then?"
"Then he..." Her voice trailed off, "He said he was coming to my company. I told him he was harassing me, so I called the police, but he still insisted on coming."
Ling Yun didn't speak.
"Wei Guo knows about this," Chen Lingling continued. "He said he would handle it, but I don't know how he handled it, and he didn't tell me."
Ling Yun stood up. "You wait here," he said. "I'm going to the police station."
The middle-aged policeman was still sitting in the duty room, eating instant noodles. When he saw Ling Yun come in, he put down his chopsticks.
"Something else?"
Ling Yun sat down opposite him. "I want to see Zhao Weiguo."
The middle-aged policeman looked at him. "Now?"
"Now."
The middle-aged policeman remained silent for a few seconds.
"Wait here." He stood up and went inside.
After about ten minutes, he came out and said, "Come with me."
Ling Yun followed him inside. They passed through an iron gate and walked down a long corridor with closed doors on both sides. At the end of the corridor was a small house.
The middle-aged policeman pushed open the door.
Zhao Weiguo sat inside, his hands on the table, handcuffed. He had bruises on his face, a cut on his lip, and his hair was disheveled. Seeing Ling Yun, he paused, "Ling Yun?"
Ling Yun sat down opposite him.
The middle-aged policeman stood at the door. "Ten minutes," he said.
Zhao Weiguo looked at him, opened his mouth, and asked, "Why are you here?"
What do you think?
Zhao Weiguo lowered his head.
"I..." he said, "I acted impulsively."
"That person," Zhao Weiguo continued, "has been loitering around the company entrance for several days. I know he's here for Lingling. I had people chase him away, but he wouldn't leave. Yesterday I saw him again, even following my car. I..."
"And then I..." Zhao Weiguo's voice was very low, "I just couldn't help it."
Ling Yun didn't speak.
"I know I was wrong." Zhao Weiguo raised his head. "I shouldn't have hit him. But that person, he... he's bullied Lingling for so many years, I don't want him near her again."
Ling Yun looked at him. "He deliberately let you see him, deliberately made you take action."
Zhao Weiguo's expression changed.
"he……"
"He has a criminal record, is heavily in debt, and debt collectors come to his door every day," Lingyun said. "He's short of money, and he's trying to extort you."
