Chapter 134 The Vanished Emily
Chapter 134 The Vanished Emily
"Don't be afraid, Sura, tell me! Who is it?!"
These words were forced out from between Green's teeth, accompanied by a noticeable tremor.
Sula shuddered violently, lifting her tear-blurred face, her eyes darting around in terror. Her lips moved, her voice barely audible, yet it exploded in Green's ears like thunder: "It's—it's Emily—"
Green was struck dumb, frozen in place.
Emily? Their cousin Emily?
"What—what did you say?" He could hardly believe his ears.
Sula seemed frightened by his reaction and cried even harder, sobbing intermittently, "I—I don't know—I heard noises downstairs—I peeked—and saw Sister Emily and Aunt arguing—very fierce—and then—and then Emily didn't say anything, her face was so scary—she suddenly pulled a knife from behind—from the kitchen—it was the bread knife!"
Sula suddenly clutched her head and screamed, "Emily stabbed Auntie from behind! She stabbed her so many times! Auntie collapsed! So much blood! So much blood! Emily was just standing there, holding a knife, and the knife was covered in blood!!"
"She looked at her aunt—and then—and then she saw me!"
Sula's body trembled violently, as if she were once again seized by that terrifying gaze.
"She saw me—she was holding a knife and walking towards me—step by step—her face was expressionless—like—like a puppet! I was terrified, I turned and ran—I ran back to my room, locked the door, and hid under the bed—I heard her footsteps stop outside the door—stop for a long time—and then—and then she left—"
She grabbed Green's arm and broke down in tears, crying, "Brother! She killed Aunt! She'll come and kill me! She will! She must have seen me just now! She won't let me go! Help me, brother, I'm scared!"
Emily? Will she kill Sura?
No----
Despite Sura identifying Emily as the murderer, Green still couldn't believe it.
With Uncle Victor dead, Sylvia is practically her only remaining family. Could she really bring herself to do it?
Out of control? But if she was out of control, how did Sula survive?
This all makes no sense.
"Where is Emily now?" Green's voice was a little dry and hoarse.
"I don't know."
Sula shook her head frantically, tears streaming down her face. "I hid under the bed until it was completely silent outside before I dared to come out—Emily—was Emily hiding? Was she waiting for us?"
Green didn't speak, but drew the Silent Messenger from his waist and slowed his pace toward Emily's room.
The door was slowly pushed open.
The once tidy room is now a complete mess.
The wardrobe door was wide open, and several plain-colored dresses were haphazardly pulled out, half of them dragging on the floor. All the drawers of the desk were pulled open, with papers, quill pens, and odds and ends scattered everywhere.
The walls of the room were covered with scratches from fingers, and faint traces of blood were visible.
However, the person has already disappeared.
"Emily—" Green murmured, trembling.
The scene before my eyes can only be described as shocking.
It seemed the initial argument had started here. An argument, a crime, and then—cleaning up the evidence, a hasty escape? The horrifying scene kept replaying in his mind.
He walked to the desk and glanced at the scattered papers. Most were everyday shopping lists and copied fragments of poetry, but one crumpled and unfolded piece of paper caught his attention.
The handwriting was messy and forceful, repeatedly scribbling the same sentence: "Dad—why wasn't it him who died!!!"
The handwriting was distorted, conveying an endless resentment.
Green's temples throbbed.
Sura's terror, the messy room, the bloody scratches, and this piece of paper—all the clues pointed to a fact that Green could not accept.
Emily—has she really lost control?
Overwhelmed by grief over his uncle's death and hatred for Green, he finally snapped during an argument with his aunt Sylvia, leading to the tragic murder of his own parents.
Then, in an attempt to cover up her crime, or perhaps driven to a deeper madness, she cleaned up the scene and fled in a panic, and might even—actually—go after the witness, Sura.
The chain of logic seems to be tightening.
Sura survived perhaps only because Emily, after committing the crime, was also gripped by a great panic and hurriedly searched for things before fleeing, without having the time or daring to thoroughly search Sura's room.
"Brother—" Sula had followed us unnoticed, standing in the doorway, her face pale, clutching her arm tightly, her voice filled with helplessness and fear, "Emily—she really—what do we do? Auntie—she's still downstairs—"
Sura's words instantly jolted Green awake.
Yes, Auntie! No matter what happened, Auntie Sylvia is still lying in a pool of blood!
"Stay here, lock the door, and don't come out no matter what you hear." Green turned around, pressed down on Sura's trembling shoulders, and said in a deep voice, "I'll go downstairs—to see Aunt. Then, we'll go notify the sheriff."
He had to see for himself whether his aunt was alright. He also had to find more evidence.
Sula nodded vigorously. "You—you have to be careful, brother. Emily—she might not be far away—"
Green took one last look at the messy room and the crumpled paper in his hand, stuffed it into his pocket, then gripped the "Silent Messenger" tightly and turned to walk towards the stairs.
The strong smell of blood in the living room made Green feel somewhat disoriented.
After confirming that there was no one else in the surrounding rooms, he slowly approached Aunt Sylvia and then knelt down with a thud.
Why————
After a moment, he forced himself to calm down and observed carefully.
Aunt's fatal wound was in her back, a deep cut, consistent with a sneak attack. Emily's sequence of actions also fits this pattern; the best way for an assassin to kill is through a sneak attack.
This will also allow her to digest the magic potion more quickly.
He remembered that the "he" on the note must have referred to himself.
Because she failed to stop him and caused the death of Uncle Victor, Emily hated him, and by extension, she also hated Aunt Sylvia, who defended him.
Green got up, went to the phone, picked up the receiver, and dialed the police station.
The sheriff arrived quickly. Leading the group was a stern-faced middle-aged man named Leonard.
He listened carefully to Sura's sobbing account, examined the note Green had found, and personally inspected Aunt Sylvia's body and Emily's messy room.
Sula huddled in the corner of the sofa, wrapped in the blanket Green had draped over her, trembling uncontrollably. Her eyes darted away in fear when she answered questions, and she would break down in tears when she got to the crucial part.
Anyone with experience could tell that this was a child who had been extremely frightened.
Sheriff Leonard's gaze shifted between Green's pale face and Sura's figure, and finally, he sighed.
"Preliminary assessment suggests that Emily Hayes lost control of her emotions and attacked the man with a knife after a heated argument with Mrs. Sylvia White. She then cleaned up her tracks and fled the scene with a few belongings."
