Chapter 58 Brunan Castle
Chapter 58 Brunan Castle
Upward target location.
A luxurious carriage traveled along the dirt road, followed by eight armored and shielded knights.
Suddenly, a light cavalryman came swiftly from behind, his hooves splashing mud as he stepped over puddles.
The sound of hooves from behind caught the attention of the knight in front. The knight closest to him gripped his horse's flanks with his legs, turned the horse around, and drew his sword from his waist.
"Stop, rider."
A loud voice rang out.
The rider quickly reined in his horse to slow down, took out a coat of arms from his pocket, and said, "It is me, Hansen, a messenger from the Upper Mark Post Office. I have an urgent message to deliver to Viscount Jennings."
The knight glanced at the badge, confirming it belonged to the post office, and still roared, "Dismount! Stand back! Hold the letter in both hands!"
The messenger obediently complied, as if he were already used to the knight's shouts.
The knight spurred his horse forward, picked up the envelope, and checked the sealing wax and the seal.
"Where did it come from?"
"Baihe Territory".
The knight raised an eyebrow.
"Wait on the side."
After saying that, he turned around and went to the carriage. Inside the carriage came the sounds of women laughing and moaning.
He paused for a moment, then raised his hand and knocked on the car window. The woman's voice inside the car suddenly stopped, followed by a rustling sound.
A moment later, the curtains were drawn back, revealing a handsome face covered in makeup.
Viscount Jennings's face showed impatience. "Knight Aston, as a man, don't you know that interrupting a gentleman's 'morning exercise' is an extremely rude offense?"
"You need to give me a reason that satisfies me, understand?"
The knight bowed and presented the letter with both hands. "I know I'm guilty, but this letter was sent from Baihe Territory. My lord said that any letter from Baihe Territory, no matter when, will be given to you to review immediately."
"Um……"
Viscount Jennings frowned slightly, stretched out his smooth arm, and took the letter into the carriage.
"Go down."
"Yes."
"Viscount, shall we continue..." A cloying voice swirled in her ears as a completely naked woman tried her best to flaunt her sexiness.
Viscount Jennings gave his usual fake smile. "My little Yeta, let me finish reading this letter first."
He tore open the envelope, quickly scanned a line, and finally landed on that one sentence.
Baron Shirakawa and his son are dead.
His pupils twitched violently, and his chest rose and fell slightly, but he quickly returned to calm.
The atmosphere inside the carriage was eerily quiet, and Yeta leaned back slightly.
Viscount Jennings's face was expressionless, but the oppressive atmosphere made her almost faint.
After a long while, the former drew back the curtains, and the knight was still waiting by the side.
How far are we from Brunanburg?
"Reporting back to you, sir, it's still four li to go, and it should take about an hour. It's just past noon now, and we have plenty of time before the Marquis's scheduled time of 2 p.m.
"Speed up!"
"yes!"
……
Brunan Castle sits on a cliff among the mountains, while at a lower location, magnificent buildings still stand, grand and solemn even in ruins.
That is the ruins left by the elves.
Inside the castle, crisp footsteps echoed along an arched corridor leading into the depths.
Viscount Jennings, dressed in magnificent robes, stood tall and proud on the marble floor.
The walkway is lined with stained glass windows, engraved with various images, such as angels descending and knights charging... all of which are exquisite and lifelike.
"Da da da..."
Viscount Jennings quickened his pace and soon arrived at a gate made of hemlock wood.
A middle-aged man dressed as a butler bowed slightly to him.
"Viscount Jennings, the Marquis summons you."
Viscount Jennings nodded in acknowledgment, and the butler, wearing white gloves, pushed open the door.
Behind the door was a spacious area with a long wooden table and a roaring fire in the fireplace, the flames illuminating the man sitting in the central lord's chair.
The man looked to be in his forties, with very well-maintained skin, but the large bald spot on his forehead proved that he was older than that.
The man, dressed in a green and white brocade robe, leaned leisurely against the lord's chair, toying with a silver wine cup in his hand, which was decorated with some bone pieces.
With just a slight raise of his head, the air of someone accustomed to high positions naturally arose.
The absolute ruler of the uphill target land, Marquis Louis-Pold Lindenbrog.
Viscount Jennings bowed and said, "Jennings greets Your Excellency the Marquis."
At the same time, he also noticed an arrogant-looking man sitting to the marquis's side.
The man wore a blue wizard's robe with tight cuffs embroidered with purple lace. His black hair was neatly combed back, with a hint of gray.
Jennings paused, about to speak, when he saw the wizard raise his hand.
"Put away with these formalities. There are no outsiders here. Sit down."
Viscount Jennings bowed and sat down in the nearest chair.
The Marquis tapped his fingers on the table.
"Jennings, how's the ore from White River Territory?"
Jennings reported: "As agreed, Baron Kramer will deliver the remaining ore from August to Brunan Castle on October 15th."
Upon hearing this, the Marquis nodded in satisfaction.
"but……"
Upon hearing this, Jennings immediately felt two sharp gazes directed at him.
"I have just received an urgent report from the White River Territory that Baron Kramer died on September 27, just five days ago."
"Dead?" the wizard scoffed. "Baron Leo Kramer was His Majesty's appointed royal guard knight. He was granted the title of baron for his bravery and meritorious service in battle, and his territory was so rich that even many viscounts were envious."
At this point, the wizard glanced at Viscount Jennings.
"Let's not even talk about who has the guts to offend my honor, Cordwin."
"Within the borders of Cordwin, tell me, how many knights of such skill could possibly harm him?"
The Marquis tapped his fingers on the table faster, waiting for Jennings' reply.
Jennings replied, "The letter says that Baron Kramer perished together with the werewolves who invaded his territory."
"Werewolf?"
The Marquis was clearly taken aback and looked at the wizard.
"No," the wizard slightly raised his palm, and with a single clench, a ruby pendant from Jennings' neck flew into his hand.
"This is a talisman made by my class, Ade Magic Academy. It serves as a warning of danger and also has a slight photo-taking function."
He murmured an incantation, and the green spiritual imprint flashed before his eyes.
"Sign..." The wizard's expression gradually turned sinister, a ruthless glint in his eyes.
"What's going on?" the Marquis asked.
The wizard's voice was icy. "I believe Baron Kramer didn't die at the hands of werewolves, but rather from witchers..."
The Marquis frowned slightly, but Viscount Jennings suddenly realized, "Now that you mention it, thinking back on it now, I did feel something was wrong at the time. That witcher used witchcraft on me!"
The wizard slammed his fist on the table in anger and screamed, "Well, well, this damned freak dares to assassinate a baron appointed by the kingdom!"
"From Holt back then, to Geralt not long ago, and now another Witcher has emerged."
"Louis Pold, I remember that white-haired Geralt was the woman who killed you."
The marquis toyed with his silver cup, his voice low and somber.
"It's a vampire bird, sir."
"Ha, so you say it's true, then what do you have to say for yourself now?"
The Marquis raised his head, his pupils sharp. "Jennings, send a knight to capture that witcher. Judge him and send him to the gallows."
The wizard immediately retorted, "No, no need to report, just kill them! These non-human races are cruel and vicious; trying to capture them alive is just asking for trouble. Let them go to hell!"
The Marquis pondered for a moment, then placed the silver cup on the table with a dull thud.
"Then I'll do as you say, kill him."
