Chapter 10 Encountering a Rainstorm
Chapter 10 Encountering a Rainstorm
The river rippled with light. A boy carrying a bow and arrows and a spear was happily collecting bird eggs from the reeds.
During his morning exercise today, Zhou Ye had just caught two fish in the river when he noticed several flocks of pheasants jumping around him.
Isn't that a blatant provocation?
First, he drew his bow and shot an arrow, and unsurprisingly, the pheasant was hit by a 0, and the arrow was hit by a -1? In desperation, he threw a spear, and almost hit the spear by a -1 as well.
However, many things turn out unexpectedly. In the end, Zhou Ye was pleasantly surprised to find many bird eggs in the grass. By now, he had already collected more than half a basket.
A flock of indignant birds circled overhead, mocking this shameless egg thief. This made Zhou Ye burst into laughter. "You little punks! Come and bite me if you dare!"
However, at that moment, a strong wind suddenly blew in, and even many of the birds scattered.
Looking up at the sky, I saw clouds rolling on the horizon, and the wind was getting stronger and stronger.
Zhou Ye's expression changed slightly. Was it about to rain heavily?
You see, even though the fence has been built, I'm still sleeping in a tent. What if it rains? Am I supposed to stay in the tent the whole time? Can't I even go outside?
This must have been my mistake. We brought so much stuff, yet we didn't bring any raincoats or straw hats? And the houses in our little family home aren't even finished yet.
Without further hesitation, Zhou Ye hurriedly returned to his small home.
On the way back, I figured it out. Since my Agility was already +5, my speed had increased significantly again. If I hurry, I could make the round trip in a day... right?
I hope this heavy rain will slow down so I can bring some rain gear.
He put the basket of bird eggs into his tent. Then Zhou Ye picked up the canvas backpack. Important things were kept in the canvas backpack, and carrying it wouldn't hinder movement; it was indeed a very good thing.
This is also Zhou Ye's preparation for the possibility of escaping, so he can just pack his backpack and go!
Inside the backpack were five pre-made flatbreads and a small packet of salt. The flour was mainly for making snacks for outings.
After thinking for a moment, Zhou Ye wrapped the two fish in large leaves and stuffed them into his backpack as well. Leather armor, bow and arrows, waist knife, spear... seeing that everything was ready, he immediately ran quickly towards the old camp.
As he ran, Zhou Ye thought: If I really can't make it in time, I might as well increase my physique and have a full recovery!
Fortunately, Zhou Ye was quick enough. He arrived at the old camp shortly after noon.
Unfortunately, just as they arrived at the entrance of the old camp, a torrential downpour hit them, startling Zhou Ye so much that he quickly ran into the wooden cabin...
……
Looking out the window, the heavy rain had turned into a downpour, and even the temperature was dropping rapidly.
Zhou Ye couldn't help but feel fortunate. If he had stayed in the small family home, the ground would have been very humid, and he wouldn't have had anything to cover himself with.
He couldn't help but reflect on his actions; everything had gone smoothly before, which had made him somewhat complacent. Wilderness survival is not easy; it involves not only various dangers but also harsh weather conditions.
Furthermore, in such a torrential downpour, I'm very likely to catch typhoid fever. What's even more terrifying is that my health is so low; I'm practically a fragile character.
Even though there are typhoid fever medications available, their effectiveness isn't guaranteed. Therefore, good health is extremely important.
And so, Zhou Ye hid in the cabin until nightfall, covering himself with a blanket and lost in thought, before drifting off to sleep.
When I woke up this morning, I found the sun already shining brightly on the earth, and a rainbow arching across the distant sky. I don't know when last night, but the torrential rain had stopped without me even noticing.
It seems this was just a false alarm. However, Zhou Ye has already learned his lesson.
When they left, they put on their raincoats and straw hats. They also took two large pieces of canvas, which could be used to set up a sunshade in case of emergency.
There were also two bundles of hemp rope, one bundle of straw rope, and several kilograms of iron nails found in the tools.
Once I get back, I should build a residence as soon as possible.
Finally, there was a blanket and a pillow stuffed with black juniper grass. Zhou Ye didn't take everything. He had thought it through; he wanted to leave some personal belongings at the old campsite, just in case he needed to camp there later.
In addition, they took a wooden basin, and also took some pots and pans.
When Zhou Ye appeared at Xiaojiayuan, his carrying pole was even laden with a basket full of mushrooms. A sudden downpour had caused mushrooms to sprout everywhere in the mountains overnight, providing him with an extra dish.
After looking around the small community, Zhou Ye felt relieved, as the losses didn't seem too great.
Although they forgot to dig drainage ditches, the small campsite was situated on relatively high ground. Furthermore, each tent had a raised wooden frame placed under it, covered with a thick layer of dry grass.
There's not much to say. The top priority now is to build a shelter that can protect against rain and wind.
The original bamboo raft frame has been dismantled. Taking advantage of the soft ground after the rain, let's dig the foundation first!
Oh, and the drainage ditches around the little house...
That said, this residence is also temporary. A proper residence would be a massive undertaking and certainly couldn't be completed in a short time.
Zhou Ye plans to build a bamboo house on the site where the bamboo rafts used to be. It will be similar to the bamboo houses common in southern China.
Of course, it will definitely be larger than the original bamboo raft frame, and can hold other things besides a bed.
The day after the foundation was dug, Zhou Ye took his axe and machete and went to the stream.
Finding many pebbles and cobblestones along the stream, Zhou Ye picked up some of the more handy ones to use for practicing basic throwing later.
Because the stream flows quite fast, there is nothing in it except for a few small catfish about the length of a finger.
Stepping across the rocks to the other side, Zhou Ye entered the bamboo forest. However, looking around, he couldn't help but exclaim, "Huh?"
On the ground of the bamboo forest, several small animals were scurrying around. Upon closer inspection, they turned out to be round bamboo rats. And there seemed to be quite a few of them?
After thinking for a moment, Zhou Ye cut down two bamboo stalks and dragged them back to his small home. He also cut a long piece of thin hemp rope and went back into the bamboo grove.
Using thin hemp rope and some materials from the bamboo forest, Zhou Ye carefully observed the bamboo rats' trails. He then set up more than ten pre-made traps. Whether they worked or not, he figured he'd just try his luck!
After finishing these tasks, Zhou Ye avoided the direction of the traps and continued cutting down bamboo...
